ZZ Top, “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas,” has been rocking for over 50 years, blending rock, blues, and boogie in a way that’s earned them millions of devoted fans. Their signature image—beards, hotrod cars, spinning guitars, and iconic keychains—has become as recognizable as their sound. The band was formed in Houston in 1969, merging Billy Gibbons’ Moving Sidewalks with Frank Beard and Dusty Hill’s American Blues. Their 1973 album Tres Hombres, featuring the hit “La Grange,” catapulted them to national fame, and their 1983 album Eliminator marked a shift towards a tech-influenced sound, propelling them into MTV stardom.
Throughout their career, ZZ Top has been a legendary live act, performing for millions worldwide and receiving critical recognition, including a Grammy-nominated documentary. The band’s lineup, consisting of Gibbons, Hill, and Beard, remained intact for over five decades until Dusty’s passing. After temporarily stepping in for Dusty in 2021, Elwood now handles bass duties permanently. With their mantra of “Tone, Taste, and Tenacity,” ZZ Top’s authenticity as roots musicians has kept them fresh and relevant. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and recognized as Texas heroes, ZZ Top remains true to their legacy, continuing to abide as rock icons.
